RELEASES

DEBRIS

"[Debris] feels like a "Mad Max" & "Stranger Things" fever dream… the band ditches the fuzzy guitar and thrashing drums of their past songs for piano and an ornate entourage of strings" - Nylon, 2020

"UNI release perfect music video for the times. [Debris] has a post-apocalyptic feel with a genderless alien as a cult leader." - Gay Times, 2020

"[UNI] stands out from the pack like few other bands in recent memory. If a sci-fi glam rock revival really is in the works, UNI is in the perfect position to become both the genre's best-seller and standard bearer." - San Diego Reader, 2020

ADULT VIDEO

“… it’s a wild, trippy ride into some truly colorfully perverse minds. And we are very here for it.” - Nylon, 2017

DONNA MARIJUANA

“… a dazzling track that’s dressed to dance in psychedelic swirls.” - Cool Hunting, 2021

Brain-melting time travel video whips up a tasty mix of late-20th century Waldorf salad, with plenty of nuts… fun, funky, and free – the perfect soundtrack for a groovy record party…or a munchie run to the 7-11.” - Post-Punk, 2021

PREDATOR’S BALL

"UNI might have the work ethic and creative independence of a DIY band, but that's about where the comparisons to your high school punk band end." - Out of The Box, iHeartRadio, 2020

"bitching and bewitching" - Flaunt, 2020

"There’s nothing subtle about New York trio UNI… the band has been marrying striking, larger than life visuals with psychedelic-tinged art pop since 2017. The band showcases their starpower, as well as a cutting sense of humor and vast knowledge of cultural references with each song delivered…” - KEXP, 2020

DNA

"Musically, they gleefully crush the zeitgeist beneath their fashionable heels, opting for a mix of ’70s art-prog and sludge metal, as filtered through a more gothic sounding Smashing Pumpkins… Singer Jack James’ ghostly falsetto only makes the proceedings all the more eerie and disconcerting." - BlackBook Magazine, 2020

“A cyborg recording of analog tape, industrial drum machines and bass keytar exploring postmodern themes on genetic mutation and futurism through a goth lens. All that and more is featured in the cinematically striking and thematically alarming video” - Alt Press, 2020

AMERICAN FAG

“Uni's 'American Fag' Is a Queer Anthem and a Pushback on P.C. Culture.” - ADVOCATE, 2019

“Glitter-rock meet psychedelic, with a hint of punk, is merely touching on what this sounds like. Uni look like the theatre/art kids that you'd actually want to spend your lunch break with at school.” - V MAGAZINE

BIOGRAPHY

Uni and The Urchins have opened for The Flaming Lips and toured with The Dandy Warhols, Starcrawler, and The Claypool Lennon Delirium. They’ve been releasing singles on vinyl 45s and are planning their debut album release soon as the zombie apocalypse abates.

kemp muhl

Leaving a modeling contract for Maybelline to pursue orchestral arranging, Kemp has played bass for Jack White, Lou Reed, Yoko Ono and had a critically acclaimed psych band with Sean Lennon. She’s acted in a Jim Jarmusch film, a Steven Tyler music video and starred in many big brand commercials. Kemp is currently recording a soundtrack for Crispin Glover and produces Uni and The Urchins’ music/directs their short films. She has also directed videos for bands such as The Smashing Pumpkins and The Killer’s Mark Stoermer, and has appeared on multiple covers of Nylon magazine, Japanese Vogue, Numero, Jalouse, Harper’s Bazaar, L’Officiel, Oyster and more.

Jack James Busa

Since graduating from Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts with a BA (Honors) in Drama, Uni and The Urchins’ front man Jack James has made recent appearances on such television shows as the FOX original series Gotham and the lead role in World Domination Pictures' feature film, Mister Sister (2021). James also helps creative direct and style Uni and The Urchins’ short films in addition to starring in them.

From Blackbook magazine; “Singer Jack James’ ghostly falsetto makes the proceedings all the more eerie and disconcerting… an alarmingly tall man who resembles a cult character actor from horror movies. Jack James made an immediate mark with videos such as "American Fag," where he not only displayed impressive vocal chops but also oozed charisma and star power. He is anything other than what you'd expect.”

David Strange

David Strange has played guitar for Courtney Love and won the Jimi Hendrix contest. He runs an art installation company that counts the Moma and most major art galleries as a client, but got his start building surreal sets for Uni videos.

Entertainment Weekly: “David Strange conjures a psych-rock freak-out that manages to make the substance seem more nightmarish than glamorous.”
